This is CEO member, Jillian Bettis. We have just completed the book, Things You Wish You Knew Yesterday, written by the architect of the CEO program, Craig Lindvahl. My favorite chapter in this book is titled “It Matters How You Say It.” I related to this chapter because it made me realize how much our words and the way we say them can affect the people around us. I have had times where I meant well, but said it in a way that came off wrong, and it hurt someone without me even realizing it. One thing this reminds me of is the idea that once you say something, you can’t take it back, it’s like squeezing toothpaste out of a tube. No matter how hard you try, you cannot put it back in. This chapter is a reminder that being thoughtful with your words and how you say them is so important. One quote from this chapter that I will always remember and take with me throughout life is “When talking to other people, the words you choose and the way you deliver them have tremendous effect.” This is a lesson that I will carry with me in future careers, relationships, and any other conversations throughout my life.
