This is CEO member, Ainsley Doris. We have just completed the book, Things You Wish You Knew Yesterday, written by Craig Lindvahl, the architect of the CEO program. My favorite chapter is titled “Four People Standing on a Street Corner.” This chapter discusses the four kinds of people in the world: the decision maker, the planner, the fun maker, and the peacekeeper. Even though it is our natural tendency to think we do best when we are around people like us, actually, you need to be around people who approach problems in a different way than you do to be successful. You need the decision maker to move the conversation along, you need the planner to make sure the decision you make is an informed one, you need the peacekeeper to make sure everyone is heard, and you need the funmaker to make sure everyone has fun. This chapter stood out to me because it is difficult to get along with others who are different from you, especially as someone who likes to work independently, and it has been one of the biggest lessons that CEO has taught me. “Recognizing the value in others is something successful people do every day. Seek out others who are different from you. Once you do, everything in your life is richer.”
